Word Chain

Word Chain is a vocabulary game built on one simple rule: each word you type must start with the last letter of the previous word. TIGER → RABBIT → TAIL → LION → NURSE → ... Keep the chain alive for as long as you can before the countdown timer runs out. It's quick to learn, genuinely challenging to score high on, and a real test of how fast you can pull words from memory under pressure.

How to Play

A starting word is given and a timer begins counting down. Type a word that begins with the last letter of the displayed word, then press enter. If the word is valid and starts correctly, it's accepted, added to your chain, and a new countdown begins for the next word. Each accepted word adds a small amount of time back to the clock. Run out of time or submit an invalid word three times and the game ends.

Scoring

  • Each valid word earns points based on its length — longer words score more
  • Faster responses earn time bonuses that keep the clock alive longer
  • Chain length multipliers reward sustained streaks without hesitation
  • Rare or uncommon valid words score bonus points

Strategy Tips

  • Plan ahead — while typing one word, think about what letter it ends on and have your next word ready
  • Avoid trap endings — letters like Q, X, and Z are hard to start words with. Steer toward words ending in common consonants like T, N, R, S
  • Have fallback words — know a few reliable words for every letter so you never blank completely
  • Use word families — if you're stuck on a letter, common endings like -tion, -ness, -ment give you chains to use

Difficult Letters

The hardest letters to chain from are Q, X, and Z. Prepare for these: words starting with X include xylophone, xenon, and xerox. Words starting with Q include queen, quick, quiz, and quartz. Words starting with Z include zero, zebra, zinc, and zone. Having these ready turns a potential chain-breaker into a high-scoring move.
